Chapter Thirteen

After easing Xan’s arm off his chest, slipping out from underneath her, and tucking the covers back around her naked body, Brody headed to the kitchen to cook them some breakfast.

But it wasn’t his growling stomach he was thinking about. It was the woman he’d just left that controlled his thoughts.

She was an enigma to him. Logically, he knew he should avoid her, but at this point, that was out of the question. It was apparent Xan didn’t know him, so he should let that worry go. He wouldn’t, but he could focus on other problems. Problems like those three agents he needed more information on and one Dave Simmons currently spending his golden years in Prairie County, Arkansas. The same county he’d placed Xan in when she first went into Witness Protection.

Brody needed to make sure she was safe from anyone wanting to harm her, especially her ex and his people, both for her own sake and his peace of mind. Because if he didn’t focus on her protection, he’d just focus on her. He’d already lost the battle to stay away from her, so now he needed to figure out how to temper his need to be with her. Putting his energy on work would help some. Not much, but some. At this point, he’d take what he could get.

As long as he could get some of her in the process.

He rummaged around her fridge, pulling out some eggs and bacon. He found the coffee in the cabinet above the coffeemaker and set it to brew while he scrambled some eggs and reined in his thoughts. He could worry about what to do about her when he wasn’t standing in her kitchen wearing his boxer briefs. Turning his attention to food, he wasn’t sure how much she ate, but he was a big man, so he used all the eggs in the carton, then set it aside to fry up the package of meat.

Mmm…pork. He was starving. Last night, he’d worked up an appetite, one he fully intended to satisfy before working it up again with Xan. Very, very soon. He’d just finished frying the bacon, shoving several sizzling pieces in his mouth and letting the rest drain on a paper towel, when he heard the sleepy shuffling of feet. He smiled at the sound as he cleaned the pan to use it for the eggs, then setting it aside to grab a cup from the cabinet.

“Good morning,” he said, pouring her some coffee, not looking at her.

He heard her yawn and grumble something before the lazy foot shuffling started again. He turned to hand over the coffee he’d just poured, and the air locked in his lungs. She was leaning against one of the chairs, waiting for her coffee, her hair a tousled mess. Her robe barely covered her thighs, and it gaped open at the top, giving him a luscious view of her mouthwatering cleavage. She was fucking beautiful.

And he was toast. No way around it, this woman had him by the balls.
